Future Cities Pilot

The "Future Cities Pilot" (FCP), an initiative by Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC), aims at demonstrating and enhancing the ability of spatial data infrastructures to support quality of life, civic initiatives and urban resilience. The first phase of this pilot project (termed FCP1) is based in Europe and is sponsored by Ordnance Survey Great Britain, Institut National de l'Information Géographique et Forestière (IGN) France, city of Sant Cugat del Vallès (Barcelona), Spain and virtualcitySYSTEMS GmbH Berlin and in collaboration with buildingSMART International (bSI). The objective of the OGC pilot project is to demonstrate how use of, international standards such as CityGML and IFC together can provide stakeholders with information, knowledge and insight which enhances financial, environmental, and social outcomes for citizens living in cities. Results from this initiative will be documented in Engineering Reports (ERs) in the context of a hands-on engineering experience. This initiative is aimed to develop, test, identify gaps and demonstrate the use of these technologies in a real world-type scenario developed in collaboration with the sponsors. The final demonstrations will be presented in Smart City Expo in Barcelona in November, 2016.

Projektbeschreibung

Human, natural, and physical systems interact in space and time, and the digital systems in cities will become increasingly diverse and numerous, with many owners. Cities therefore need an open, vendor-neutral standards platform for communicating spatial and temporal data. Many of the longstanding technical boundaries separating indoor, outdoor, underground and atmospheric information have been overcome. By demonstrating capabilities employed in a holistic urban planning scenario, the Future Cities Pilot will show how cities can begin to reap the benefits.

The Chair of Geoinformatics submitted a proposal called "Dynamizers" which has been accepted by FCP1. Dynamizers is an innovative concept, which allows modeling and integration of dynamic data and sensors with interoperable semantic 3D City Models. A first version of a conceptual schema for representing Dynamizers has already been published. More details on Dynamizers can be found here.

Within FCP1, the key responsibilities of our chair will be:

  • Editorial contribution
    • Compilation of Engineering Report with support from partners
  • Content contribution
    • Scenarios and Use Cases, and requirements for associating dynamic data (such as sensor readings, tabular data) to elements of the city model
    • Conceptual schema of CityGML Dynamizers and its documentation
    • XML schema documents of CityGML Dynamizers
    • Plan and conduct a demonstration using the pilot scenario
